Lhyfe announced that Sealhyfe, the world's first offshore hydrogen production pilot , has begun producing its first kilos of green hydrogen in the Atlantic Ocean, marking a decisive milestone for the future of the sector. The Sealhyfe was successfully towed 20 kilometers into the Atlantic and connected to the SEM-REV energy center.
The progress on the project demonstrates Lhyfe's ability to make concrete advances in the hydrogen industry by leaps and bounds. By launching the world's first offshore hydrogen production pilot project, Lhyfe wanted to demonstrate the technical feasibility of this type of initiative and gain operational experience to facilitate rapid scale-up.
Therefore, the company has made the bold decision to subject Sealhyfe to the harshest conditions. The platform will be tested under real conditions on a redesigned floating structure connected to Central Nantes' SEM-REV offshore test center, which is already connected to a floating wind turbine .
The Sealhyfe platform, which measures less than 200 square meters in area, has the potential to produce up to 400 kilograms of hydrogen per day.
Sealhyfe was moored at the Quai des Frégates in the port of Saint-Nazaire from September 2022 to May 2023. During this time, Lhyfe and its partners carried out a series of commissioning tests to gain the ne Special Data cessary knowledge and move on to the second phase of the project with confidence.
Following the first phase, Lhyfe has already updated its specifications for all its sites, both onshore and offshore, so they can apply this valuable experience. All Lhyfe units will therefore benefit from the advanced operational optimizations tested during this trial.
On May 19, Sealhyfe was towed to the SEM-REV offshore test site 20 kilometers off the coast of Le Croisic, France. She was then connected to the site's underwater center via a dedicated umbilical cable that was specially designed for hydrogen application. The system was rebooted and up and running in just 48 hours. As a follow-up to this first stage, the company announced that the HOPE project had been selected by the European Commission within the framework of the European Clean Hydrogen Association. The project has received a €20 million grant, allowing Lhyfe and its partners to prepare for commercialization. This unprecedented project, at a scale of 10 MW, will be able to produce up to four tonnes per day of green hydrogen at sea, which will be exported to land by pipeline, then compressed and delivered to customers.
Lhyfe aims to validate industrial solutions in offshore hydrogen production through these two pioneering projects. These solutions will be submitted in response to future calls for projects from various governments to help achieve the target set by the European Commission as part of the REPowerEU plan of 10 million tonnes of clean hydrogen produced in the European Union by 2030. To achieve this, Lhyfe has already partnered with wind turbine developers and marine energy specialists such as EDPR, Centrica and Capital Energy.
